Book Nook

It is very important that children are read to every day.  Make it part of your daily ritual, whether it’s after a meal or at bedtime.  Reading books to and with your children is not only important for literacy and a good predictor for future reading success, but a wonderful bonding experience that both you and your child will treasure forever.  Make books a part of everyday and work on building a “library” for your child.

When reading books don’t just stick to the words on the page.  Point out things in the pictures and use descriptive words, this is especially helpful to younger children.  Instead of or in addition to reading the words, “Sam and his Mom hopped in the car.” you could ask your child to or, if your child is too young, you can describe and point to things in the picture, such as “Sam and his Mom got into the big, blue car.  It has a yellow star on the door.  Sam is wearing his blue hat.”  You can also ask questions of your child about the story, picture or to predict what will happen next. Also, don’t be afraid to make sounds and change your voice for different characters. You will have fun and so will your child.

There are lots of wonderful books available to read to and with your children.  Listed below are some suggested books that you might consider purchasing on the following topics:
